School Service

" Part of cheerleaders' responsibilities is to create pride in their school. They need to make everyone proud of being a part of their school. Service to the school provides this spirit. Brainstorm ideas among your squad on what they can do. Think about fans, students, staff and athletes in this process. Acknowlegement and recognition on key elements. "

7 Steps for Brainstorming

STUDENTS

  • Random Acts of Kindness Day, Feb. 17 (handout from WA Student Leadership, 'In the Loop')
  • Greet the buses on the first day school. This creates an atmosphere of excitement and shows that the cheerleaders care about them.
  • Post "welcome back" signs for each class on the first day of school.
  • Recognize a "Fan of the Week" . The more you award the positive, spirited behaviors, the more others will want to emulate them too.
  • Host contests to get the students involved.
  • Encourage the students to dress up in school colors every Friday. As the cheerleaders travel through the day, have them give out spirit bracelets to the participating students." You've been tagged".
  • Make 3 foot tall poster people for each club and sport in the school. Post them in the school cafeteria. Reconizing these groups makes them feel important. You can get these posters from www.orientaltrading.com. Type in " Bulletin Board Kids".

STAFF

  • Make door signs for teachers' doors.
  • Leave apples in the lunch room for the teachers on the first day of school.
  • Throw an appreciation luncheon for the custodians
  • Give special treats during Classified Staff Week
  • National Teachers Appreciation Week- First week in May. Do something special for the teachers in your school

ATHLETES

  • Decorate the locker room with large paper jerseys, balls, singlets, helmets
    with player's number and name.
  • Make cakes for the team to celebrate the beginning of the season.
  • If your team makes it into playoffs, give motivational treats to the players.
  • Recognize the senior players at the end of their season. You can give flowers, personalized posters or candy.
  • phtoOranges: Leave a bunch of oranges in the locker room with messages written on the skins.
  • Carve the football player's numbers in pumpkins for Halloween. (Ferris High School, Spokane, WA)
  • Or get the mini pumpkins and decorate them to look like your mascot.
  • Give water bottles to the team with personalized labels that say "Quench
    your thirst for a victory".
  • Paper bag scrapbook - An easy to do scrapbook for players
  • Pumpkin Mouth -Paint a tennis ball orange and decorate it like a pumpkin. Cut a slit where the mouth is and stuff with treats and a inspirational message. Can also paint it to look like your school mascot - Wildcat, Tiger, etc. - from Nothing But Cheerleading site
