Varsity.com American Shool Spirit web site In second place... The Wildcat cheerleaders from Oak Harbor High School have a mission in mind when they start a new school year. Besides leading by example and never giving up, they hope to encourage school spirit by including teachers, students, and the community, while also mixing up traditions with innovative ideas and showing good sportsmanship on and off the field. The top goal for Oak Harbor cheerleaders is to create pride and spirit by involving the student body and motivating their athletes throughout the season. To do this, the squad has come up with several spirit raising activities that have been quite successful. Each week, the cheerleaders pick a Fan of the Week, and that person receives photo spirit buttons and their picture posted on the cafeteria bulletin board and cheerleading website. During Homecoming week, they give out purple and gold spirit bracelets to the most spirited students. This year, the cheerleaders sponsored the "Pride my Ride" Homecoming contest where students were judged on whose car was the decorated the best for spirit week. Oak Harbor cheerleaders are also sure to support all of their teams, so they cheer for football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and wrestling. When they aren't busy planning games, pep rallies, and Homecoming, Oak Harbor cheerleaders dedicate their time to serving the community. Their main community projects include the Susan G. Kormen Race for the Cure in Seattle, the Soapbox Challenge Series, a race for kids with special needs, and National Night Out Against Crime, a program that speaks out against crime and drugs. A few other projects they have been involved in include Relay for Life, Red Ribbon rallies, canned food drives, Adopt a Family at Christmas, and stunt clinics. Athletic Director Nicki Luper says, "The OHHS Wildcat cheerleading program is one the community and school are very proud of. They represent themselves, their school, and the community in a very positive manner and one that we are proud of. These accomplishments are based on a sound work ethic, the ability to collaborate toward common goals, and acts of altruism."
